Kanon dapat diartikan sebagai kumpulan buku/kitab suci yang dianggap sah/asli.

Tidak ada satu pun dari para rasul yang namanya tertulis di Alkitab yang mengenal Alkitab seperti yang kita kenal/miliki saat ini. Buku-buku yang merupakan bagian dari Kitab Suci baru dikanonisasikan berabad-abad setelah Kristus disalib. Bahkan ketika daftar tersebut ditetapkan pada tahun 382 M [1], tulisan-tulisan itu tidak dikumpulkan menjadi satu buku sampai setelah penemuan mesin cetak. Kanon hanya merupakan daftar buku-buku, bukan sebuah buku. Bahkan Alkitab Gutenberg diterbitkan dalam lebih dari satu volume [2].

Tidak ada kanon yang umum di antara orang Yahudi pada masa Yesus hidup di dunia sebagai manusia. Firman Tuhan yang tertulis memang awalnya dipercayakan kepada orang Yahudi, tetapi Tuhan tidak pernah memberikan mereka daftar isi. Karena alasan itu, sejak lama telah ada banyak perbedaan pendapat mengenai kanon—bahkan di antara orang Yahudi. Perjanjian Lama membutuhkan waktu lebih dari seribu tahun untuk disusun, dan daftar buku-buku yang disebut sebagai tulisan terilham terus bertambah seiring dengan turunnya wahyu dari Tuhan dalam masa itu.

Klaim bahwa tujuh buku deuterokanonik ditambahkan pada Konsili Trent (1546) untuk mendukung inovasi doktrin Katolik adalah mitos umum yang dengan mudah dapat dibantah. Umat Kristen awal terutama memakai terjemahan Yunani dari Perjanjian Lama, yang dikenal sebagai Septuaginta, yang mencakup tujuh buku deuterokanonik. Kanon Alkitab, termasuk 46 buku Perjanjian Lama dan 27 buku Perjanjian Baru, pertama kali ditetapkan oleh Gereja Katolik pada Konsili Roma pada 382. [2] Pada tahun 1436, Johannes Gutenberg, seorang pandai emas dari Jerman, mulai merancang mesin yang mampu mencetak halaman teks dengan kecepatan luar biasa pada masa itu—produk yang diharapkan bisa menutupi kerugian dari bisnisnya menjual cermin logam. Pada tahun 1440, Gutenberg telah menetapkan dasar-dasar dari mesin cetaknya, dan dalam sepuluh tahun berikutnya ia telah membangun prototipe yang bisa digunakan dari mesin cetak tersebut. Martin Luther menyertakan buku-buku ini dalam terjemahannya yang pertama dalam bahasa Jerman, yang mendahului Konsili Trent.
